This story is a very good example of what could very well happen in the real world if natural disasters occur. Recently, countries have started to implement disaster plans to help with the chaos and loss of direction in these situations. It is important that authority figures and emergency people know what to do. The Philippines is a good example of this. They have created a manual for the mayors, firefighters, policemen and other important people so that they could help everything go smoothly in a disaster. The Philippines "Operation Listo" has started a movement that will prepare people better for natural disasters on both a local and national scale. This is an important plan to have in place because it gives the authorities a bit more control over a situation that may cause more confusion than necessary.

It's important for someone to take charge in times of trouble, like Miranda's mom in "Life As we Knew it" or the "Operation Listo" that you mentioned. These examples show us that in harsh times, someone has to step us and be the leader, and we have to ask ourselves if we should be that person.
ReplyDeleteSomeone definitely needs to take charge and be levelheaded in these sorts of situations. In psych we learned the 10-80-10 theory. It basically means that 10% of people will take charge of a emergency situation, 80% freak out a little and follow the leader, and 10% will freak out and most likely die. It's important that governments take steps to ensure that everyone will be a top 10.
